Rediscovering the Doctrine of Work: A Faith-based Convening

“Many low-income individuals have increasingly turned away from work as a meaningful or even helpful part of their lives. Myriad factors contribute to the reality that low-income individuals are not working- particularly in communities dominated by multi-generational poverty” The Chalmers Center.

Rediscovering the Doctrine of Work is a convening of faith-based organizations and faith led individuals to hear from leaders in the field providing a faith centered understanding of work and how to incorporate it into the transformational services offered to those served.

Speakers

Beth Kuhn

Beth Kuhn is Chief Engagement Officer at the Kentucky Cabinet of Health and Family Services, leading policy and operational efforts to better integrate workforce, health and human service programs. She was until recently Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Workforce Investment, collaborating with many partners in a system of Kentucky Career Centers providing employment, vocational rehabilitation, veterans, and other workforce services to employer and individual customers. Prior to her appointment as Commissioner in December of 2014, Beth served as Sector Strategies Director, assisting with the design and implementation of industry sector-based approaches to workforce and economic development.

Beth has over 30 years of experience creating and implementing innovative workforce programs. She previously served as Director of Workforce Development at the Vermont Department of Labor, as Project Director at the United Way of Chittenden County (VT) where she developed employer partnerships to improve retention and advancement of entry-level workers, and as Vice President of WFD, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in work and family benefits, women’s advancement, and public-private partnerships to increase the availability and quality of child and elder care programs nationwide.

Beth has a BA in Public Policy from the James Madison College of Michigan State University, and a Master’s in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University.

Mike Addison

Mike Addison is the Vice President of the Appalachian Children's Home (ACH) in Barbourville, KY. ACH is a residential therapeutic home for teenagers between the ages of 11-17. Also, ACH Family Services recruits, trains and certifies high character foster families. Finally, The Career Pathways Institute (CPI) runs from the campus of ACH. CPI provides workforce training to 65 of Kentucky's best companies. These relationships are then used to provide the dignity of work to the residents of ACH. Mike earned his Bachelors in Business Administration and MBA from The University of the Cumberlands.

Bryce Stout

Bryce Stout is the Economic Development Manager at Advance Memphis. After earning a B.A. in Economics, Bryce and his wife, Bethany, moved to a historically under-resourced neighborhood in South Memphis, where they live, work, worship, and raise their two children. Bryce also works with The Chalmers Center to train non-profit and church leaders around the country to implement faith-based workforce development training into their programs, and he is currently working toward a Masters of Divinity.

Erin Bottomlee

Erin graduated from Austin Peay State University in 2009 with a BA in Public Management and Concentration in Criminal Justice. Erin worked as both a Corrections Officer and Police Officer before beginning her work with the Christian Appalachian Project in 2014. She went on to work with the Appalachian Mission Center in Louisa, Kentucky before assuming position as Director with the St. Vincent Mission where she has enjoyed her work since May 2016.
