Small business loan from KHIC helps McCreary County woman start upholstery business

Tuesday July 07, 2009
STRUNK, Ky. – Necessity may be the mother of all invention, but it has given birth to a lot of small business owners as well.

Sandra Kidd, of Strunk, Ky., is one of those who became a small business owner by necessity. After having worked in several factories over the last 22 years, she struck out on her own after losing her job. With the help of a $1,500 microloan from Kentucky Highlands Investment Corporation, Kidd took over Kidd's Upholstery from her parents.

"I enjoy it," she said. "I like to be my own boss. I started sewing when I was 13 years old and have 22 years of professional sewing experience."

Kidd repairs and replaces upholstery on boats, cars and furniture; and she guarantees her work.

Kidd said it makes more sense - and cents -- to reupholster a piece of old furniture than to buy new furniture because the quality is better. Customers can reach Kidd's Upholstery at 606-354-3031.

"At a time when people are trying to stretch their household budgets, Sandra has started a business that will help them do just that," said Edgar Davis, the business development specialist at KHIC who made the loan to Kidd.

"People also don't realize that there are more than 40,000 businesses in KHIC's 22-county service area that have four employees or less. There are a lot of small business owners and entrepreneurs in the area."

KHIC offers training programs for small business owners to help them improve their likelihood of success. For more information about the training program, contact KHIC at 606-864-5175.
