Cumberland College professor has served five years on Kentucky Highlands board

Kentucky Highlands Investment Corporation (KHIC) recently honored one of its newer members for service to the economic development organization.

At a March 5 board meeting, Janie Carter, associate professor of business at Cumberland College, received a plaque for five years of service to the KHIC board.

“Kentucky Highlands has one goal: getting jobs for our region,” said Jerry Rickett, president and CEO of KHIC. “Janie is a great example of a community leader who shares that vision and helped lead the charge. We’re glad she’s serving on our board.”

Carter was elected to the KHIC board in 1997. Since 2001, she has served as vice chairwoman for the board.

While originally from Georgia, Carter went to school in Kentucky (Pine Knot High School, Cumberland College and the University of Kentucky). After a teaching stint in her home state, she returned to Kentucky, where her mother grew up in McCreary County.

She now teaches at her alma mater as an associate professor of business. Carter also is involved with Cumberland College’s international studies and internship programs.

“I didn’t realize it had been five years already,” Carter said. “Time goes by so quickly. I’m very pleased to be involved with Kentucky Highlands and hope five years is just the start.”
